Situated on the banks of Lagavulin Bay on the island of Islay, Lagavulin Distillery is one ofthe oldest distilleries in Scotland. Distilling took place on the banks of Lagavulin Bay as early as 1742. The rich, peaty water that runs down the brown burn and through the Solan Lochs into the hills just next to Lagavulin Bay has served as the lifeblood of the distillery.
Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky is known as one of the most intense, smoky single malt whiskies ever made — the peated barley used to create Lagavulin Single Malt has up to twenty times as much exposure to peat smoke as compared to typical Scotches.
Following fermentation, the whisky is distilled twice. This is the slowest distillation process of any Islay distillery, and gives Lagavulin its characteristic round flavors and mellow edges.
The 16 year old is matured mostly in ex-bourbon American White Oak casks, but is finished in ex-sherry European Oak casks. The long distillation and maturation processes assist with the characteristics and complexity that can be found in this wonderful Islaymalt. The 16 year old is a true classic from Islay which combines pungent smoke along with complex flavours of dried fruits, spice, malt, vanilla and oak.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Massive peat.Ultra-intense iodine carries a shade more spice than of old. The fruity-sherry notes are clean, vanilla is much deeper. Beautifully layered.
Palate: A peaty smokiness with a touch of spice/pepper note, slight tar note, a touch of salty dark chocolate, taste mirrors the aroma, seaweed, chloraseptic – medicinal, black tea
Finish: A little spicelightens the grip of the peat and vanilla. Dries off with malt, dried dates andiodine.
Comment: A true classic in every sense that offers breathtaking depth.
