Calera Wine Company, referred to as California’s Romanée-Conti”, has been named a “Top 100 Winery” by Wine & Spirits four times in the past decade. Calera is an esteemed producer based in Mt Harlan in California's San Benito County. Calera, which is named for an on-site lime kiln, is notable for its limestone-rich soils, a rarity in California.
This is what English wine writer AndrewJefford said so beautifully about viognier: “At its best, this variety’s winescan send shivers down your spine, blow gently over the hairs on your nape, andtweak your nipples for luck.”
Tasting Notes: Produced by the Winemaker of the Year in 2007, the 2013 Mt Harlan Viognier has a beautiful expression of the variety from California. It possesses a unique bouquet of pear, honeysuckle, dried apricot and musky green mango. Full bodied and very nicely balanced between is fruit flavors and gentle acidity.
The palate is alluring yet restrained with flavors of tangerine marmalade, Meyer lemon and mineral. Its silky, mouthwatering, lush texture persists into a delicious juicy and long finish. It's a terrific introduction to the grape.
